Adelio's Sewer Repairs for Failed Dye Tests

Under the Clean Water Act, in the state of Ohio, your storm line and sewer line are meant to be kept separated and each contained, so that neither contaminates the other. But whether you’re thinking of transferring your property or putting your home on the market, it can be wise or even required by local laws and regulations to have a dye test performed.

But what is a dye test? What happens if it fails? And what can be done to fix it if there’s a failure? Adelio’s can perform preliminary dye tests to assess the potential causes of the infiltration, and our sewer repair solutions are more than capable of ensuring that your home will be ready to pass one before you transfer your property or put it up for sale!

What is a Dye Test?

The dye test is performed to determine whether there is any water being passed between the storm system and the sewer line. This serves to help prevent sewage from contaminating our waterways while also making sure that stormwater isn’t getting into our sanitary sewer system. Stormwater flowing into the sanitary sewer system is a major contributor to sewage system backups and sewer overflows throughout our communities and affects all residents.

How is a Sewer Dye Test Performed?

A sewer dye test is performed by adding a non-toxic, water-soluble dye into your property’s downspouts or drains. While flushing water through your home’s system, your sewer system will be monitored to see if any dye is detected, indicating that dye is transferring from the storm drains to your sewer pipes.

The sewer dye test is a pass if the dye remains only in the sewer system or the storm system that it is run through.

Should the dye be found in the other system that it wasn’t originally run through, then there is a cross-connection and repairs must be made.

Who Can Do Repairs for a Failed Dye Test?

Adelio’s sewer repair services are ready to ensure your sewer lines and drain lines are ready for dye tests. Our process is straightforward and effective, ensuring that your sewer and drain lines work perfectly for many years to come.

  • First, Adelio’s begins with laying plastic mats down next to where the trench will be. This is to help preserve your lawn and keep the job site tidy for an easy cleanup.
  • Next, soil is excavated and piled up on the plastic mats.
  • The pipes are then replaced before they are covered with gravel.
  • The installation of the sewers is then inspected by the municipality.
  • The trench is then filled with some of the excavated soil. Some of the soil will be hauled away so that there isn’t too much soil on top when the soil settles.
  • Once the trench has fully settled, it is ready for new topsoil and reseeding!
